Preserving 1200-year-old Buddhist heritage for future generations.

International Project: Cleaning, Protecting, and Preserving Borobudur, Prambanan, and Ratu Boko in Indonesia

Our Mission in Indonesia

We have been asked to help in Indonesia by cleaning the Borobudur, one of the wonders of the world, from algae, fungi, and moss, and to clean and protect the 1200-year-old Buddhist relief panels for future generations.

This project was visited and approved by Minister Bussemaker of Education, Culture, and Science (OCW) in February 2017.
The centuries-old Buddhist panels suffer greatly from the growth of algae, fungi, and moss. These damages have caused nearly irreversible harm to the 1200-year-old carvings and many of the Buddha faces, which are almost lost forever.

The Damage and Its Challenges

Currently, algae, fungi, and moss are being removed with bamboo brushes, which further damage the panels, and the growth of algae, fungi, and moss is extremely rapid due to high temperatures (30°C and above) and heavy rainfall.

UNESCO Restrictions and Our Breakthrough

Our Collaboration with Lama Ganchen

We have also cleaned and protected the Buddha Center in Albagnano AHMC (Italy) with Bionano, to the great satisfaction of Lama Ganchen Rinpoche. Following this, Lama Ganchen Rinpoche asked us to help clean and protect the sacred temple in Java. He facilitated our contact with the right people in Indonesia.
